Sidewalk Rental Program FAQs

 

 

 

Hey there, you know what we were thinking? Wouldn’t it be great if we had one centralized repository of questions that were asked frequently? Okay, maybe we are the only ones that lay awake at night thinking of rentals. We liked that idea so much that we decided to create a “Frequently Asked Questions” page (catchy title huh).

Q: How does the rental program work?

Q: When are booklists due to Sidewalk at the start of a new semester?

A: An appropriately formatted booklist, using Microsoft Excel, is due at least two weeks prior to your start date. This provides us with enough time to analyze it, create rental prices, send you a preliminary draft back prior to creating any rental shelf tags that may be needed before your start date. 

Once your list has been uploaded, we recommend that you conduct multiple test transactions (use “Test" and “Test” in the first and last name fields) to ensure that pricing and titles are pulling up properly and that email confirmations are being sent.  Be sure to refund any test transactions you complete.

Q: Should I notify Sidewalk if my refund policy changes?

A: Absolutely! We want to make sure that the refund policy that is listed at the kiosk matches what you have in-store. Send us your updated policy to support@gosidewalk.com.

Q: What if I need to add a title or have an updated retail price?

A: Go ahead and send new titles or price adjustments to your booklist to support@gosidewalk.com in the same file format as my original list (Excel MS).

Q: Can I have my students contact you if they have questions about their rental?

A: Nope. Our rental program builds a strong relationship between you and your students, and for that to work, we need to stay in the background. We're a resource for you, the bookstore, not your students. So ask us any question you have!

Q: What is RENT+? 

A: RENT+ is an option students will see on the kiosk which will allow them to pay a few extra dollars for insurance against damage, administrative fees for replacing a lost textbook, and protection against non-return fees.

Q: What is an Independent Rental?

A: This means no vendor has backed the title, you can still rent it if you choose, but you will be required to retain the book at the end of the semester.

Q: When does Sidewalk send out rental return reminders to my students?

A: Sidewalk will send out four different rental return reminders to your customers at 10 and 5 days leading up to the return deadline. We will also send them a reminder on the due date as well as confirmation of the forced purchase transaction. These emails will direct the students back to your store if they have any questions.

Q: When do Purchase Orders get finalized?

A: When BookIt finalizes a Purchase Order, it locks the order so that no more changes can be made. This allows Sidewalk to streamline the reconciliation process for you at the end of the term. 

BookIt will finalize any Purchase Order that you manually create 15 days after your rental return due date. BookIt will finalize any automatically generated Purchase Order 7 days after your rental return due date.

Q: Can I make any changes to my Purchase Order after it is finalized?

A: We do not accept changes to POs once they are finalized. If we do, it causes both our and your accounting team nightmares. If you have forgotten to add a title to a PO, you should just create a new one.

Q: When do I need to finalize my Return Orders?

A: All Return Orders should be finalized 21 days after your rental due date. You wouldn't believe how much this helps us with the reconciliation process. If we have clearly documented Return and Purchase Orders from you, all before these deadlines, then our Accountants are happy--which means that everyone's happy.

Q: When are books due back to Sidewalk?

A: Books need to be in our Ogden, UT warehouse 28 days after your rental due date. We take care of the shipping logistics; you take care of the packaging and the accurate Return Order.

Q: What is the 5% timely bonus?

A: At the beginning of the semester we withhold 5% of the retail amount to ensure that rentals are returned to Sidewalk on time. You will receive that amount back on your end of term reconciliation check for all books that are returned to Sidewalk no later than 28 Days after your due date.

Q: What happens if I have missed the 28 or 45 day deadlines?

A: You can still return books to us--don't worry--but you will not receive the 5% timely bonus.

If it has been more than 45 days after your rental return due date, we'll assume that you intend to keep any books that haven't been returned, and will automatically invoice your store for those books.

Q: Should I accept late rental returns from my students?

A: Late returns cause you and us all sorts of headaches arising from reconciliation, shipping, and the time it takes to liquidate the book. Because of this, we do not recommend accepting late rental returns.

If you do accept a late rental return from a student, and you decide to send it back to Sidewalk, those books will be subject to the same 28 day and 45 day deadlines as any other rental return.

Q:Will Sidewalk reverse Forced Purchase transactions for a late rental return?

A:Similar to a late rental, Sidewalk can reverse these transactions, but the book will be subject to the same 28 day and 45 day deadlines. This means that if the book is then returned to us 28 days after the due date, it will not be eligible for the 5% timely bonus. At 45 days, you will be invoiced for the book.
