Give Hugs, not Bugs
This week our developers pulled on their Bug Boots and got to stomping. Here's what we fixed:
•You can't type out a Custom ISBN: How annoying was this one? If you tried to type out a Custom ISBN in the Create a Custom Item part of the Adoption Editor, Hero would try to guess which book you were thinking of in much the same way a toddler tries to get your attention. Now, Hero will wait until you've finished typing before trying to auto-populate the remaining fields for you.
•Profile Preferences don't Save: Faculty users have a couple of special communication toggles that the rest of us don't. But that doesn't matter much if those toggles don't save when they're clicked. Now they save beautifully, which makes for happy faculty.
•One-Letter Instructor Names: Remember a couple months ago when we started showing instructor names in the Section drop-down? It was a great idea that helped students figure out whose class they were taking. But if your data sync was configured a particular away, Hero would just display the first letter, which is generally less helpful than the whole name. So now the whole name is in there.
•Readopted titles skipping New Arrivals: A couple stores using Hero's Auto-Adoption Push noticed that if they readopted an item, it was skipping the New Arrivals queue in Title Research, which made it massively difficult to tell which items were Approved for sourcing. Also, though the adoption timestamp was correct in Title Research, it was incorrect in the All Items Report. Bad news everywhere. We fixed it; now your faculty can readopt with impunity.
•Improvement: This week we added a new Control Date called the Penalty Date. It's completely optional, but if you want to use it, here's what it is and how it works.
If your store gets a last minute adoption from a faculty member and has to scramble to source inventory, it costs money. And time. And sweat. So some institutions have an Adoption Due Date, then a bit of a grace period, and then a Penalty Date. If a faculty member tries to change her adoptions after the Penalty Date, she absolutely can, but she has to acknowledge that she's past the date.
You can edit that message to say whatever you like in your Communications Settings page. Some schools get pretty draconian about it:
If you'd like to use the Penalty Date, you can see it on your Control Dates page...
...and report on any changes past the Penalty Date here, on your Stats page.
•Improvement: If Hero has the right access to your student enrollment data, it will take your students directly to their registered classes. They don't need to think about anything. If Hero doesn't have that access, it's fine; students just need to use the drop-downs to create their booklist themselves. But there's a message that students see, where Hero's trying to tell them that it tried to make this a seamless effortless wonderland for them, and couldn't get it done. As of this week, you can edit that message. If you do nothing, then by default it will say:
We couldn't locate your courses automatically. Please select "View Catalog" above to select your courses and find course materials.
If that doesn't fit with your store culture or you want to make it more relevant to today's youth ("Word out, my home fry. Classes are epic fail. Lulz."), then you can do that on your Communication Settings page.
•Improvement: If you Message a Publisher (or if they message you!) they (or you!) will now get an email telling you to check Hero.
Improvements that didn't fit Elsewhere
•Improvement: This week we added rental pricing to Price Insights! So if your store has rental pricing for a title, it will display (New and Used) in two new columns on that page and the downloaded report. Now you can align your rental and retail pricing to be competitive with the market at a glance.
•Improvement: In the upper left-hand corner of Title Research, you can see a button that will let you Show All Sections, and right next to it, one that will let you Hide All Sections. It's a quick way to set the level of detail you need while you research titles. We default it to Show All, but if you don't like that, click Hide all and Hero will remember your preference using cookies (not the kind you eat).
•Improvement: This week we updated Hero to version 3.12 of the Text Price Comparison service! If that doesn't cause you to kick back from your chair with delight, that's fine. Nebraska has updated the Nebraska/Hero integration, and we're right up there with them.
